Skincare 101: Creating your routine!

The world of skincare is very confusing if you're just starting out. With so many lists that recommend products but don't explain if they will work for you or not, you can end up with even worse skin and less money.

So, I feel it is my duty to make things simple and easy for people who wanna get into skincare, but don't know where to start.

If you resonated with any of that, this is the post for you.

The first step to creating your perfect skincare routine is getting to know your skin. Be sure that you know what it needs and likes before starting to buy products randomly.

↓You can find a guide on how to know your skin type in this post right here↓

After you've figured out your skin type, we can get started on building your routine.

1. Makeup removal

Now before we even start thinking about anything else, we've got to get rid of any trace of makeup on your skin. At night your skin renews and heals, and it can't do that if your pores are clogged with foundation and powder. Not properly removing your makeup can cause acne and irritation and make everything you will do next, useless. My favorite way of getting rid of makeup is oil cleansing. It gets rid of even the most stubborn mascara and even helps unclog pores. You can also use micellar waters or cleansing towelettes, whatever you feel best about.

Now that you've gotten rid of every "visible" trace of makeup, it's time to cleanse your skin.

2. Cleansing

These two first steps are what we like to call "the double cleanse". The first was to get rid of any surface dirt and grime, and the second to actually cleanse the skin and get into the pores. Cleanser is one of those products that to me you don't have to splurge on, one from the drugstore will work just as well.

There are different types of cleansers for different skin types. To find your perfect one, refer to the blog post below:

This next step is only a weekly or twice a week thing, but it's the key to having glowy and clear skin.

3. Exfoliation

Exfoliating is important because it gets rid of dead skin cells that make your skin look dull or clog your pores.
Now, this is something you have to be very careful about, exfoliating too much will cause irritation and even more acne or texture.

There are two types of exfoliation, manual or chemical.

Manual being mixtures that
have little beads or granules that scrub away (quite literally the surface skin cells)

Chemical being mixtures of different chemicals that penetrate the skin to get rid of dead skin cells from the
surface and below

Manual exfoliation is more beginner friendly, but I promise I'll do a dedicated post to chemical exfoliaters in the future.

4. Toning

This step basically does two main things ; make sure you've gotten rid off all the dirt and balance your skin's pH levels that were thrown off in the previous steps.

Toners can also tend to specific skin concerns like acne or dehydration.

If you suffer from acne, a toner that has salicylic acid or witch hazel will help out.

If your skin is dry, a toner that has hydrating properties like rose water will suit you better.

5. Serums

Serums are like little concentrated potions that when applied sink in quickly and don't leave your skin feeling heavy or sticky . They come in a wide range to treat different concerns you may have. It's a step that helps your skin and gives it what it needs.

If you're starting out building a routine, I recommend to start out simple and do your research on which serum is best for you.

6. Moisturizers

These seal in all the products you used and give your skin an extra layer of moisture that helps to make your skin plump and healthy. Different skin types benefit from different types of moisturizers. For example, gel moisturizers work best for oily skin.

This is the main outline that most routines follow, but there are add ons to treat different concerns like aging and dark marks but these are the basics!

If you have any doubts on anything leave it in the comments and I might dedicate a blog post to it!

Thanks for reading, and I hope this helped get your skincare journey started!
